The Radiation Safety Information Computational Center (RSICC): Half Century of Support To the Nuclear Science Community |
Bernadette Kirk
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
The Radiation Shielding Information Center (RSIC) was established in 1963 in response to the Weinberg Report, Science, Government, and Information. In 1996, RSIC became RSICC (Radiation Safety Information Computational Center) to reflect the scope of technical coverage and to keep up with changing computational technology. RSICC was charged to collect, test, package, and disseminate computational tools used in radiation shielding, transport, and protection. RSICC is the custodian of more than 1700 computational tools gathered from national and international laboratories, educational institutions, and private industry. An international presence was established early, and RSICC has served scientists and educators in the U.S. and 84 countries for over 40 years. RSICC maintains a high standard of operation in the area of the code/data testing and follow-up on the needs of the governmental, educational, and private customers who use RSICC services. Communication with the RSICC user community is maintained by the RSICC Newsletter, phone, fax, email, and of course the internet (http://rsicc.ornl.gov).
