The Computational Engineering and Science Conference is envisioned as a series of meetings held in Washington DC that will focus on the impact of high-end computing (HEC) on computational science and engineering applications of critical national importance.  CESC 2005, the first conference in the series, focused on combustion simulation.  The Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) were the primary organizing agencies.

In the technical sessions on ground transportation, high speed combustion, gas turbine combustion and enabling technologies, speakers at CESC 2005 addressed barriers and opportunities related to the full effective utilization of HEC for large-scale simulations of combustion engineering and science.  These discussions, although focused on combustion for this conference, should be relevant to all application science and engineering disciplines.  Special sessions provided a venue for federal Program Managers to discuss policy issues and future opportunities affecting HEC across mission agencies, and for industry representatives to identify improved opportunities for collaboration and HEC advances needed to impact the industrial competitiveness of the United States.  Agency perspectives by senior executives in DOE, DoD and NASA brought to light the future relationship between HEC and large-scale science and engineering challenges we face.
